Intro to Composition

Intro to Composition: Be the creator in your musical experience.

Intro to Composition, led by Stephen Hein, is a year-long class that takes young musicians from performing to creating. This group class (up to 15 students) is designed for intermediate to advanced players who want to write their own music.

You'll learn how to develop melody, harmony, rhythm, and form. You'll explore instrumentation, use notation and composition software, and give and receive feedback alongside other young creators. The goal is to prepare original work for a live performance.

What You'll Learn:

• Write original music
• Develop melody, harmony, rhythm, and form
• Understand instrumentation and notation software
• Give and receive feedback in a collaborative setting
• Prepare original work for performance

Students who perform their own compositions at an LSSM recital are inducted into the exclusive LSSM Composer Circle—a special honor celebrating their creativity and originality.
